Jak and Ann Monroe have been married for four years. Their marriage, like any other, has had its financial ups and downs. They recently hosted a family reunion barbecue at the family cabin in the woods. While they had over thirty relatives attend the event yesterday, only five of them stayed the night in the cabin, with the couple intending to stay a few more days. The cabin has more than enough beds for all seven people. The kitchen is minimally stocked with two mixing bowls, four cereal bowls, a bag of 50 paper plates, a pack of 50 plastic cups, a two-piece set of a stainless-steel boiling pot, and a matching fry pan. Plus, there are eight bath towels and matching hand towels, and more than enough leftovers for lunch and dinner.

Ann Monroe awakened this morning before anyone else in the house, only to realize they were out of oil and a few other items. Since the family had plans of staying a few more days, she headed to the local general store to pick up a few things. Here is her list:

The Suspects

Who killed Jak Monroe? You are the only one who can get to the bottom of things.
Let's get to the suspect interviews.

The Niece, Nyla Norris

Picture
First up is Nyla Norris, the niece of the victim. "Uncle Jak is my mom's brother. Well, he was. Even though I'm not that close with my uncle, I'm super traumatized by his murder. I asked him if I could borrow his car last night, and he refused. Since he's been mostly absent from my life, you'd think that he'd do me a solid, but no. I'm not too surprised that someone gave him payback. At the time of the crime, I was soaking in the bathtub at 8:30 this morning."

Auntie Abby Augden

Picture
You make your way onto the front porch to find Abby Augden, aunt to Jak Monroe. Aunt Abby is distressed by the situation and drying her cheeks as you approach. "I can't believe Jak is gone. He and I argued yesterday about a loan he was supposed to pay back to me. Now it seems silly. I was eating eggs, over-easy, in the kitchen at 8:30 am. I don't know what Ann is going to do without him. He takes care of all the finances for their family."

Louie Long the Landscaper

Picture
While on the porch, you notice the landscaper, Louie Long packing up his equipment into his truck. "Yeah, today is not my usual day to maintain the landscaping. Jak called me yesterday afternoon and complained about this broken sprinkler in the garden. I came out first thing to fix it before the sprinklers came on. I haven't been in the house at all. It's absolutely terrible what happened to Mr. Monroe. Do you know when I'll get paid? Mr. Monroe said he mailed last month's check, but I never received it."

Mia Madson, Mother-in-Law

Picture
After heading back inside the house, you stop in the den finding Jak's mother-in-law, Mia Madson. She notices you after a few moments of being deep in thought. "A couple of months back, Jak defaulted on an auto loan that I co-signed for him, without Ann knowing of it. I always thought my Ann could do better than Jak, but this is a horrific tragedy. Ann is inconsolable. When Jak was murdered, I was in the laundry room, folding laundry. I washed clothes yesterday and dropped them in the dryer last night. First thing, I fluffed them in the dryer for about fifteen minutes, then folded them."

Cousin Carson Cook

Picture
Next, you make your way to the backyard area and find Jak's cousin, Carson Cook, seated at a picnic table beside the barbeque grill. "I slept in this morning. I didn't wake up until after Ann got home at 9 am. Yeah, yesterday the sprinklers came on in the garden area, and one was shooting into the air. Jak called the landscaper out to fix it. Last month, Jak was supposed to go into business with me but bailed at the last minute. Yeah, it was unfortunate, but I'd never go after him for it. I can't believe someone killed Jak. Dang!"

Brother-in-Law Benjamin Brooks

Picture
As you go back in the cabin, you find Benjamin Brooks, brother-in-law to the victim. "I was on a jog of the nearby trails at 8:30 this morning.  Ann is my sister and is way out of Jak's league, but she loved him. I can think of a few people who'd want him out of the way. He owed me money. I would never do anything like that to him, but someone else might."
